I can no longer hold in my excitement for Dec 10th when I hop on a plane to Miami and then 2 days later board a cruise to Turks & Caicos. This is the first time that I have had the opportunity to shop for warm weather in December. Luckily there were only a few items I needed to pick up, but my budget is VERY strict, being that I need to save my money for the actual vacation as well as have enough left over for gift shopping both while I am away and then when I come back only five days before Christmas.

My main thought throughout my cruise shopping has been FUNCTION.

Bikini. Of course I already had a few. But my current collection was fit to lie on a Manhattan rooftop, at the topless Jacob Riis beach in Queens, or at the beach that I grew up on in CT…nothing that promised modesty. So I skipped the fancy options and went to Victoria’s Secret and picked up this bikini in tan. Now I have a modest top and a modest bottom in a neutral color that I can wear together or mix and match with other pieces. (VS top $24, VS bottom $14.50)
Sunglasses. I go through them like hosiery. I dream of owning an investment pair, and will, but for now, my slightly rough handling has left me grabbing cheap pairs that fit my face and stand out a bit. First I picked up this novelty pair of POLICE aviators. I ordered them off of eBay and when they arrived I was pleasantly surprised by their sturdiness and proper fit. It was a risk, but at a low price, it was worth it. Second, I picked up these edgier shades…they are Rocawear…cheap…and I love the slate color and animated shape. (POLICE $22, Rocawear $12.99)
Sun blocking head-wear. I didn’t have a sun hat. I just recently accepted the “protect my head” mentality (after turning 25…and donning a darker hair color). It is slim pickings for sun hats in December, but I found this babe at TJMaxx for next to nothing! If you look closely, its not very well made, but I can beat it up and drag it all over the Caribbean without fear. The shape is perfect, the coloring I’d change if I had the option (San Diego Hat Co. $12.99)
Embellished Pumps.So I didn’t need MORE shoes for the trip. I have open toe platform sandals, tan leather stiletto, open toed, ankle boots, and a few pairs of flats and flip flops, but with the money I saved, I saw this pair of suede studded purple platform pumps that I can wear with for evening vacation events, Christmas parties, New Years Eve, and basically as long as they last me. Plus they have a sneaker bottom! (BCBG Generation $49.99)

So there you go, bargain shopping is at its best this time of year, even if you can’t quite stomach a sweater yet.
